Following the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, there is much interest in visiting the historic monuments of both East and West Berlin. It is possible to see the art that was painted on the remaining portion of the wall in an open air exhibition known as the 'The East Side Gallery', a monument to the division of the city and the ultimate destruction of the barrier. The wall is not all the city of Berlin has in the way of historic sites and attractions for the visitor to see and enjoy. The famous Checkpoint Charlie site on the wall has a museum which explains some of the lengths people were prepared to go to when trying to leave the East. For those who would like to know more The Deutches Historisches Museum or German Historical Museum in Zeughaus covers German history to the fall of the wall.

The Brandenburg Gate, which can be seen on the German euro coins, is an iconic landmark and monument that is said to remind people of the 'past, present and future' of the city. Other buildings to look out for are the Roman Catholic St Hedwig's Cathedral, the protestant Berlin Cathedral on Spree Island and the seat of the German Government, the Reichstag Building with its incredible glass dome. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Museum Island which can be found between Spree and Kupfergraben, was set aside specifically for art and antiquities in 1841.
